I know Oppos seem to like Mazda in general but I'm curious about the Mazda 2. I might have an opportunity to get a car brand new if it's cheap enough and the 2 seems like a decent choice. Anyone have any experience with them that could weigh in on this?

Went on a cruise today with a small group of folks and my XC70 was kind of disappointing. It just has no handling, a ton of understeer and way too much body roll. Plus the seats have virtually no bolstering. If it weren't for the seatbelt, I would've fallen into the passenger seat for petes sake.

I know the Mazda 2 has no power but it's also pretty basic and, as a result, pretty light weight. I've been looking around the 2 forums and a lot of people seem to have a blast doing autox/track days in them despite the power.

So Oppo, if I do have the chance of getting a brand new car, is the 2 a good choice?

DO IT. I could have gotten one when I got my Sonata but I was young and stupid and didn't want a "gay" car, but now I'm kicking myself for being such a jackass.

apples and oranges buddy. A little mouse and a tough moose lol :]

Those 2 vehicles could not be any more different form each other.

As for advise. I would choose the XC70. But if would of asked me 10 years ago, Mazda 2, gutted, and autoX all day.

I'm looking a lot cheap sub compacts and the 2 seems the most attractive of the group (Mirage, Yaris, Versa). If I am lucky enough to get something new, I'd really like one.

The XC is a great car for what it is, a family cruiser/roadtripper but I don't have a family and rarely do road trips, more often than not I drive....spirited. The XC is going in the summer either way, its warranty ends and I cannot afford maintenance and such without that. In a perfect world where I have millions of dollars, the XC would be lowered on coils with full strut bracing and roll cage with HD endlinks but the strut bars alone are about 450 bucks, coils would be a grand, endlinks 250 and then there's still the seat issue.

I need something cheap, reliable and still fun to throw around once in a while.

the only reliable cars are the ones still under warranty lol. Maintenance is not bad on it, certainly a lot cheaper than buying a bunch of mods not intended for a XC line Volvo lol. Though, I feel you a younger dude and I fully support your need for racecarness :]

Maintenance is certainly not as bad on the XC as maybe a BMW/Audi but come summer it'll need an overhaul (still on original suspension parts, needs pads and oil to start). I figure a brand new car would have a great warranty and the only mods I would want on a 2 would be wheels and an exhaust. And I already have wheels with that bolt pattern... :P

nah all old cars are easy. They are all just bolts and nuts :] But dude, if you can get a new car, go for it. I wish I could afford a new anything. I have an A6, e36, and recently my W210. All purchased cheap, and all with many issues. I have them souly because I couldn't afford a new car. I'd take an automatic Corolla at this point over those damn things lol. You are a lucky dude for being able to purchase new. Not sure what to choose though, but i'm sure you'll fugure it out.

I've been in and out of 6 cars now. I'm 22, got my first car at 17 and so the average length I own a car is 6 months, usually because of how problematic my cars have been. If I had my way though, I'd be rocking a 1980s Ford Station wagon that I got for 600 bucks. But I need a fairly modern DD and buying used is almost always a gamble.

I like the fiesta hatch (same price range, 14 grand) but I dunno if I LIKE the fiesta hatch enough to own one. It'd come down to some test drives, like buying any other car.

Read that the day you published it and that's one of the reasons why I've been looking at subcompacts and Mazda for the most part. How has your MPGs been?

it's not my post, it's mazdaspeed2's! Just thought I'd share it. My mpg has been around 22, thanks for asking!

Oh jeez I misread the first part. I thought you were saying the MS2 was once called the MS3 and got confused. I am not a smart man.

Yup the Mirage and Versa are immediate no-go's. so it's down to the Yaris, Fiesta hatch and 2. The 2 is at the top and the Yaris is at the bottom of my want list.

I've heard the 2 is great and decently tossable

I like the 2. It's a peppy little thing if you get the manual one. The automatic sucks a little fun, but eh. Adding stiffer suspension and a fat rear swaybar helps, too. It's a little floaty in stock trim, but it's still fun.

I don't know how to drive stick but I've been wanting to rectify that for some time. Plus it means the 2 is cheaper if I get it in manual.

I like the 2 in the looks department more than the Fiesta but Ill take both for test drives.
